Maths – Range
We are carrying on with our work using data this week. We have learned how to find the mode and the median and today you will be learning how to find the range.
BBC Bitesize Averages. Mean, Median, Mode and Range – BBC Bitesize
The range is the difference between the highest and lowest numbers. For example in the numbers
10 12 14 15 17 19 21 23 24 32
You find the range by subtracting the smallest number from the biggest number
32 – 10 = 22
Try the sheets below.
Topic – Science
We have already learned that Isaac Newton was a Scientist when we looked at forces. He was famous for making the law of gravity. Today we are going to learn about him and why his Scientific work is so important. Firstly look at the PowerPoint and read the fact sheet about Isaac Newton.
t2-s-1433-all-about-gravity-powerpoint_ver_1

- See how quickly you can write out a tricky times table
- Ask someone at home to give you a times tables test
- Look at the patterns in times tables and find tricks that will make them easier to remember.
For the rest of the day
For the rest of the day I would like you to use the time to finish any tasks then do something that you enjoy doing such as playing a board game with your family, going for a walk, creating some artwork or doing a sports session.
Have a lovely afternoon!
Teams Meeting – 2.50pm We will be having achievement assembly today
Bore da dosbarth 5! Sut wyt ti heddiw?
I hope you had a great day yesterday and that you managed to complete the different tasks. I enjoyed playing Spaceman I hope that you did too.
Morning Mission – If you need to use this time to carry on with your poster for Wales then please do this. Otherwise use this time to read some of your reading page and write what pages you have read in your reading record book.
9.30am – Teams meeting. Remember that you have a star on J2 stars for attending a meeting, for uploading work to Hwb, for excellent effort and for working really hard on different tasks. Today we will be playing a game so please have paper and a pen or pencil ready.
English – Poetry
Well done for completing the work on similes and metaphors. I am really impressed with your work. Now we are going to use these sentences to write a poem. I would like you to create a poem of your own like the poem we have been looking at “Pride in our valley”. You can either use the sheet below and fill in the gaps with sentences of your own or you can create your own poem using repeated lines.
Pride-in-our-Valleys create my own poem
Maths – Median
Yesterday we looked at how to find the mode of a set of data, today we will be looking at how to find the median of a set of data/numbers.
First read the information below about how to find the median.
Then try to complete the following worksheets
If you are feeling confident with this work, then choose a set of data from your rugby players, such as their ages and find the median.
Topic – Wales
Task 1 – Complete your poster to persuade people to visit Wales.
Task 2 – Create a PowerPoint showing people the different places and attractions that they can visit in Wales. Make sure that you make people want to visit by making it look interesting or exciting. I would like a page on each of these:
- Places
- National parks
- Mountains
- Castles
- Beaches
- Special attractions
Please take your time to complete this as you have tomorrow to do this as well so try to include lots of information and please try to use your own words.
Teams meeting – 2.50pm
Bore da! Sut wyt ti ?
Great work yesterday! I hope that you now feel confident to identify similes and metaphors. We will be working on this again today. I hope that you are enjoying the different games that we have been playing. I liked the drawing challenge maybe we will do this again. Please let me know what you .
Morning Mission – Daffodils
Think about the work that we did on daffodils yesterday and use this to create a daffodil picture. Look at the pictures below for inspiration.
9.30am – Teams meeting. Remember that you have a star on J2 stars for attending a meeting, for uploading work to Hwb, for excellent effort and for working really hard on different tasks. Today we will be playing a game so please have paper and a pen or pencil ready.
English – Similes and metaphors
I would like you to create similes for the following words. Remember that similes compare words by using like a/as … as a in the sentence
e.g The daffodil is as yellow as the sunniest spring day.
- daffodil
- dragon
- mountain
- sheep
- grass
- river
- trees
- sky
- sea
- clouds
You might find it helpful to look at the poem that you highlighted yesterday for ideas.
Then I would like you to create metaphors for the same words. Remember metaphors compare things by saying something is/are something else. e.g The daffodil is a dancing lady waving from side to side.
Maths – data handling
I hope that you all managed to find the data or statistics for the different rugby players. Now we are going to use this data to complete different tasks.
Task 1 – finding the mode
Practise this by finding the mode in each set of numbers.
- 10 14 15 10 12 14 10
- 25 23 21 21 23 25 25
- 30 31 31 30 33 33 33
- 54 45 23 23 54 33 54
- 66 65 66 65 66 66 65 65
Now you are going to use the data that you found yesterday to find the mode. To find the mode you need to choose one set of data such as the players ages. Then you count how many of each age the same there are. The age that appears the most is the mode. E.G. If most of the players are 28 then the mode is 28. Do this for the other categories such as height/weight/caps
Topic – Wales poster
I would like you to imagine that you work for the tourist board and that you have been asked to design a poster that will encourage people to visit Wales for their holidays. Think about why people would come to Wales and the different things that they could do. Make your poster colourful and eye catching.
UK breaks and family holiday destinations | Visit Wales

Da iawn for your work yesterday. I can see that everyone has been working hard on the first day of our Welsh week.
Morning Mission – Welsh alphabet
Create an alphabet using different welsh words that you know. Can you think of a welsh word for each letter? Are there any letters that you can’t find words for? What letters are they?
9.30am – Teams meeting. Remember that you have a star on J2 stars for attending a meeting, for uploading work to Hwb, for excellent effort and for working really hard on different tasks. Today we will be playing a game you do not need to bring anything.
English – Poetry
Firstly, I would like you to look at the BBC Bite size page on similes and metaphors. We have worked on this a lot in class but it will give you the chance to remind yourself of the difference between the two.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/zkygrj6
Then I would like you to read the similes and metaphor class poem that was created by Class 5 in 2019.
Either
- Print off the sheet and use highlighters to highlight the similes and metaphors. or
- Make a list of the similes and metaphors that you can see in the poem.
Maths – Data handling
I loved watching the rugby game between Wales and England and I was thrilled that Wales won, so I decided that we would have a rugby themed maths lesson today. On the sheet below I have the main squad that played in that game but their data or statistics are missing. Statistics is the information about their age, height, weight and how many caps they have. I would like you to find that information. The website below might help you.
Rugby data for maths task sheet
If you complete this you could choose other players that I haven’t included and find information about them. Maybe make some Top Trump rugby cards.
Topic – Daffodils
As daffodils are the flower for Wales we are going to find information about them.
Task 1 – Find out how many different varieties of daffodils there are
Task 2 – Look at the picture of a daffodil and label the different parts of the flower.
Task 3 – Drawing a picture of a daffodil.
Look at the YouTube video showing you how to draw a daffodil and then try to create one of your own.
If you would like to create a 3D model of a daffodil then you can create one of your own or use the template below.

If you would like to celebrate St. David’s day today then come to the meeting dressed in something welsh or something red.
English – The story of St. David
Do you know how St. David became the patron saint of Wales? Do you know what he did in his life? Read the story of St. David on the PowerPoint below.
wl2-l-14-saint-david-powerpoint-welsh-cymraeg_ver_1
Then choose one of the activities below to complete.
- Create a PowerPoint of your own about the life of St. David.
- Write the story of St. David.
- Create a fact file about the life of ST. David.
Maths – Planning a St. David’s day party
When you plan a party you need to think about how much things cost and how many people would be coming to the party. Can you complete the activity below and find out how much the party would cost?
wl2-n-69-st-davids-party-planning-activity-english-medium_ver_6
Topic
- Firstly create a map of Wales and map the different places that were named in the story of St. David on to the map. For example St. Davids in West Wales.wl-g-11-black-and-white-map-of-wales-colouring-activity_ver_1

Week beginning 22nd February
Good morning! Bore da!
Well done for completing another week of online learning. I am so proud of you and you should be really proud of yourselves.
Morning Mission – For your morning mission I would like you to read as many pages of your book as you can. Find a quiet place to read and enjoy reading the story. Then find someone to tell them what happens in your story.
Teams meeting – 9.30am
English – List poem
Read the poem below which is a list poem.
In my back garden…
A large open space for me to explore,
A blanket of green stretching as far as the eye can see,
The smell of freshly cut grass lingering in the air,
Beautiful flowers standing tall amongst the bushes,
Rustling of the branches from the trees in the wind,
The splish-splash of the raindrops as they plummet to the ground.
The songs of the birds at the dawn of a new day,
Buzzing of the busy bee as he collects his nectar,
Creepy crawlies scurrying in and out of their homes,
Croaking frogs jumping beneath the tall, thick grass,
Butterflies fluttering up high, as high as the stars in the sky.
Massive puddles appear after the rain has fallen,
Thick oozing mud dripping off my shoes,
Footprints appearing as I continue my adventure,
All in my back garden…
This is a list poem where every line forms a list of different things that you would see in the garden. List poems often use the 5 senses – what you can see, smell , taste, touch and hear. I would like you to use the structure of this poem to create your own poem about Mars. Think about what you would see, hear, taste, smell and touch and try to use similes and metaphors in your poem.
Maths – Self assessment
I know that some of you have been worried about topics in maths that you are finding difficult so I would like you to make a list of the different maths that you are struggling with and upload the list to HWB so that I can see who needs help in the different topics. Please try and think of the topics as this will be really helpful for me.
If you would like to do another maths task today then choose a times table that you find difficult and find someone at home who can give you a times table test.
Topic – Safe landing
When they designed the rocket to send the Perseverance Mars Rover to Mars, they had to think about how it was going to land safely without getting damaged. The parachute had to carry the weight and with air resistance land safely.
Challenge – I would like you to imagine that an egg is the rover and you need to design and create a parachute and container to help it to land safely to ground from a height just like the Perseverance rover. Think about the materials you use and how you are going to protect your egg.
Some of the pictures below might give you ideas as to how to create your design. Good luck!
Teams meeting – 2.50pm this will be our achievement assembly.
Good morning class 5. Bore da!
Thank you for your hard work this week and well done for persevering just like the Perseverance Mars Rover.

Topic – Gustav Holst
Gustav Holst was a British composer best known for his orchestral suite ‘The Planets’. A suite is a group of individual pieces. There are seven pieces in ‘The Planets’ and ‘Mars, the Bringer of War’ is the first one.
In ancient Roman religion Mars was the god of war. Gustav Holst composed this piece in anticipation of the outbreak of World War One. It’s a march but an unusual one. Normally a march has 4 beats in a bar so you can say “left, right, left, right” but Mars has 5 beats in a bar; tricky to march to!
Listen out for: The opening two harps, strings playing with the wood of the bow, timpani using very hard-headed sticks and the gong. There’s also a solo from the euphonium.
Firstly listen to the clip below.
https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/ten-pieces/KS2-gustav-holst-mars-from-the-planets/zf6hsrd
While you are listening to the music write a list of the different instruments that you can hear or see in the video. How many can you identify?
Then I would like you to find out about the different instruments write the name of the instrument and any fact you can find out about the instruments. For example:
Gong
A gong is an East and Southeast Asian musical percussion instrument that takes the form of a flat, circular metal disc which is hit with a mallet. Gongs are made mainly from bronze or brass but there are many other alloys in use.
During the Teams meeting in the afternoon, I will be asking you what you thought about the music, if you liked it and why.
For the children who are looking for extra tasks to complete, here is the challenge sheet that I promised you.
